Where the Forbes River Flows
The Forbes River starts high up in the mountains, west of Spokes Mountain. It begins in the Willi Willi National Park, which is part of the Great Dividing Range. From there, it flows generally south.
The river travels about 53 kilometers (33 miles) and drops a lot in height, about 965 meters (3,166 feet), from where it starts to where it ends. It eventually joins another river, the Hastings River, near a place called Yarras. When two rivers join, it's called a confluence.
How the River Got Its Name
The Forbes River was named by John Oxley, who was a Surveyor-General. He named it to honor Francis Forbes. Francis Forbes later became the very first Chief Justice of the NSW Supreme Court. A Chief Justice is the main judge in a court system.
What the River Area Was Used For
In the past, the areas next to the Forbes River were important for getting timber. Many sawmills, which cut logs into planks, used to operate along the river.
The lower parts of the river were once used for dairying, which means raising cows for milk. Today, these farms mostly raise beef cattle instead.
Animals Living Near the River
Many interesting animals live in parts of the Forbes River area. You might find Dingos, which are wild dogs. There are also carpet pythons, which are large snakes, and goannas, which are a type of lizard.
