Forsyth is a city in Monroe County, Georgia, United States. It is the main city, also known as the county seat, of Monroe County. In 2020, about 4,384 people lived there. This was more than the 3,788 people who lived there in 2010. Forsyth is part of the larger Macon area.

Forsyth has a special area called the Forsyth Commercial Historic District. This district is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. It's a popular spot for visitors. You can see the Monroe County Courthouse and its square there. The area also has many buildings from the 1800s. Other interesting places in Forsyth include the Confederate Cemetery, Tift College, and the Rum Creek Wildlife Management Area.

History of Forsyth, Georgia

Forsyth was started in 1823. In the same year, it became the county seat for Monroe County. This meant it was the main city where the county government was located. The city was named after John Forsyth. He was the governor of Georgia from 1827 to 1829. He also served as the Secretary of State for presidents Andrew Jackson and Martin Van Buren.

Where is Forsyth Located?

Forsyth is in the middle of Monroe County. You can find it at 33°02′06″N 83°56′17″W / 33.035108°N 83.938085°W / 33.035108; -83.938085. The city is located along two major roads: Interstate 75 and U.S. Route 41.

Interstate 75 runs through the eastern part of Forsyth. You can get on or off the interstate at exits 185 to 188. This road goes southeast about 23 miles to downtown Macon. It also goes northwest about 61 miles to Atlanta. U.S. Route 41 goes through the downtown area. It leads southeast to Macon and west about 13 miles to Barnesville. Other state roads like 18, 42, and 83 also pass through the city.

The city of Forsyth covers about 5.91 square miles. Only a tiny part of this area is water. Forsyth is built on a ridge. Water from the ridge flows into small streams. These streams eventually join the Ocmulgee River.
