The Fort Ransom Military Post was built in 1867. Its main job was to protect settlers and workers building the Northern Pacific Railroad. This railroad connected important cities like Fargo and Bismarck. The fort was named after a brave Civil War soldier, Major General Thomas E.G. Ransom. It was built on a place called Grizzly Bear Hill.

In 1872, Fort Ransom was taken apart. The materials from it were used to build another fort, Fort Seward, in Jamestown. The army decided it was more important to protect the railroad workers there. The land where the old fort stood was later sold to people who wanted to build homes and farms in 1880. The original fort site is a few miles southwest of the modern town of Fort Ransom.
