Fort Ross State Historic Park is a special state park located in Sonoma County, California. It protects the historic site of Fort Ross, which was an old Russian fur trading outpost. The park also includes beautiful parts of the coastline and tall coast redwood forests nearby.
Fort Ross was active from 1812 to 1842. It was the most southern settlement that the Russians built in the Americas. The park covers about 3,393 acres (1,373 hectares) and was created in 1909. It is a very important historical spot in Sonoma County.
Exploring Fort Ross
Fort Ross was started by a group called the Russian-American Company in 1812. This company was involved in fur trading. When you visit the fort today, most of the buildings you see are reproductions. This means they are new versions built to look exactly like the originals.
However, one original building from the Russian settlement still stands. This is the commander's house. It is a very important historical building. It is recognized as a National Historic Landmark and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The California Department of Parks and Recreation works hard to restore and rebuild parts of the Fort. Many volunteers also help with this important work.
The Name of Fort Ross
The name "Ross" is a poetic way to say "Russian." The name was chosen in a special way when the settlement was officially opened on September 11, 1812. Lots were placed at the base of a picture of Christ, and the name "Ross" was selected.
Sometimes, the Spanish people who lived nearby called it "Presidio Ruso" or "Presidio de Bodega." Both of these names also meant "Russian Fort."
Protecting Fort Ross Park
In 2009, Fort Ross State Historic Park faced a challenge. It was at risk of closing because of budget cuts by the state. The Russian ambassador, Sergey Kislyak, spoke up to help save the park.
Later, in 2010, an important agreement was signed. This agreement was between a Russian company called Renova Group and the State of California. It was also signed with the Fort Ross Conservancy, which helps support the park. The signing happened in San Francisco with Russian President Dmitry Medvedev present.
This agreement was made to help support and promote Fort Ross State Historic Park. It also aimed to make more people aware of its history and cultural importance. Even though there were threats of park closures, they were avoided by reducing hours and maintenance across the state park system.
