Fortress Mountain is a tall mountain in the Absaroka Range in the U.S. state of Wyoming. It stands at 12,090 ft (3,690 m) (about 3,685 meters) above sea level. This makes it one of the many impressive peaks in this part of the United States.
About Fortress Mountain
Fortress Mountain gets its name because it looks strong and solid, like a fortress. It is a part of the Absaroka Range, which is a large mountain range. This range stretches across parts of Wyoming and Montana.

Fortress Mountain is found in Park County, Wyoming. This county is in the northwest part of Wyoming. The mountain is also located within the Shoshone National Forest. This forest is a huge protected area. It is known for its beautiful scenery and wildlife.

Fortress Mountain has some interesting neighbors. It is about 1 mi (1.6 km) (about 1.6 kilometers) south of a place called Sheep Mesa. A mesa is a flat-topped hill with steep sides. Sheep Mesa is a bit lower than Fortress Mountain, by about 500 ft (150 m) (about 152 meters).
Water Sources
The mountain is also important for local water. The headwaters of Cabin Creek are on the east side of Fortress Mountain. Headwaters are the very beginning of a stream or river. On the northwest side, you can find the headwaters for Sheep Creek. These creeks flow down from the mountain. They contribute to larger river systems in the area.
