How Fortuna Got Its Name
Fortuna got its name from an interesting place! It was named after Fortuna, who was the Roman goddess of luck and good fortune. Imagine a town named after a goddess! The community has had a post office since 1882. That's a long time ago!

Location and Nearby Places
Fortuna is located in the western part of Moniteau County. To its southwest, it borders Morgan County. A main road, Missouri Route 5, goes right through Fortuna. If you go north on this road for about 6 miles, you'll reach Tipton. If you head south for about 11 miles, you'll find Versailles. The main town of Moniteau County, called California, is about 17 miles northeast of Fortuna.
Land and Water Around Fortuna
Fortuna covers an area of about 0.20 square miles, and all of it is land. The community sits on a raised area, like a small hill. Water from this area flows in two directions. Some water goes southeast into a stream called the Straight Fork of North Moreau Creek. This creek eventually joins the Moreau River, which then flows into the Missouri River near Jefferson City. Other water flows northwest into Little Richland Creek. This creek eventually joins the Lamine River, which also flows into the Missouri River, but further west near Boonville.
