The Story of Fosselman's
How It All Started
The Fosselman's story began in 1919. A man named Christian Anthony Fosselman started a company called Fosselman's, Inc. He made ice cream in a town called Waverly, Iowa.
Five years later, Christian Fosselman and his family moved to Southern California. There, he started a new business in Pasadena. It was called Fosselman Creamery. This company sold milk, butter, cream, and ice cream. They even delivered these products right to families' homes in the San Gabriel Valley using their own trucks!
From Creamery to Ice Cream Shop
In 1937, Christian Fosselman sold his creamery business. He then opened a new ice cream shop in South Pasadena. This new shop was called Fosselman's Ice Cream Company. They made all their delicious ice cream right there in the shop!
Over time, more Fosselman's shops opened. One opened in Highland Park in 1941. Another opened in Glendale. The main place where they made ice cream was in Alhambra. By the 1970s, all the shops except the Alhambra location had closed. The Alhambra spot was also an ice cream parlor.
In the 1970s, the person who created Jelly Belly candies, David Klein, even rented a part of Fosselman's. He used it to sell his new jelly beans!
A Family Tradition Continues
Since the 1980s, Christian's grandsons, John and Chris Fosselman, have been running the company. They continue the family tradition. Fosselman's also sells its ice cream to about 500 other places. These include fancy restaurants, food trucks, and even retirement homes!
In 2015, Fosselman's added new treats to their menu. They started offering soft serve ice cream, soft serve custard, and milkshakes. To serve the many Asian people living in Alhambra, they also added special flavors. These included taro, lychee, and ube. In 2019, Fosselman's opened a new shop in Glendora. It is called The Ice Cream Shop.
Delicious Flavors
Fosselman's makes many classic ice cream flavors. You can find chocolate, vanilla, and strawberry. But they also have unique and exciting flavors!
Some of these special flavors are taro, ube, and lychee. These flavors are very popular with the Asian community in Alhambra. They also have seasonal flavors that change throughout the year. These might include fresh peach, sweet corn elote, and watermelon sorbet.
In the past, they have offered other interesting flavors. These included black sesame, dulche de leche, horchata, matcha green tea, Oaxacan chocolate, and red bean.
What People Say
Fosselman's Ice Cream Company has received great reviews! The Los Angeles Times newspaper once called Fosselman's "the Alhambra emperors of ice cream." This means they thought Fosselman's was the best ice cream place in Alhambra! The British newspaper The Guardian also praised Fosselman's. They called it the "Best place to drink: Milkshakes."
