Fountain Inn is a city in South Carolina, a state in the United States. It is special because it is located in two different counties: Greenville and Laurens.

In 2020, about 10,416 people lived in Fountain Inn. This was a big jump from 7,799 people in 2010. The city is also part of a larger area known as the Greenville-Mauldin-Easley Metropolitan Statistical Area.

History of Fountain Inn

Fountain Inn gets its name from a cool story! Long ago, there was an inn (like a hotel) and a fountain along an old stagecoach route. Stagecoach drivers would stop there and call it "Fountain Inn." The name stuck! Today, you can see a small garden fountain at City Hall. There's also a marker showing where the old inn used to be.

Several important buildings in Fountain Inn are listed on the National Register of Historic Places. This means they are historically significant and protected. Some of these include the Cannon Building, Fairview Presbyterian Church, and the Robert Quillen Office and Library.

Geography and Location

Most of Fountain Inn is in Greenville County, but a smaller part is in Laurens County. The city has a fun nickname: "The Diamond Tip of the Golden Strip."

South Carolina Highway 14 runs right through the middle of town, where it's called Main Street. A bigger highway, Interstate 385, is on the southern edge of the city. You can get to Fountain Inn from Exits 22, 23, and 26 on this interstate.

Fountain Inn is about 17 miles (27 km) northwest of Greenville. It's also about 84 miles (135 km) southeast of Columbia, the state capital. If you take Highway 14, Laurens is about 16 miles (26 km) to the southeast.

The city covers a total area of about 8.5 square miles (22.0 square kilometers). A very small part of this area, about 0.05 square miles (0.13 square kilometers), is water.

Local Events

Fountain Inn hosts several fun festivals. One popular event is Aunt Het Day. This festival is based on Robert Quillen, a famous newspaper writer and humorist who lived in Fountain Inn. During Aunt Het Day, Main Street closes down and fills with many unique vendors, bringing in hundreds of visitors.
