Fountain Run is a small city in Monroe County, Kentucky, in the United States. It's known as a "home rule-class city," which means it has the power to manage its own local affairs. In 2020, about 216 people lived there.

History of Fountain Run

Fountain Run was first called "Jamestown." It was officially created in 1816 on land owned by Jacob Goodman Sr. At that time, it was part of Barren County.

After 1820, Jamestown became part of Monroe County. Its name was changed to "Fountain Run" in 1856. This was because there was already another town named Jamestown in Kentucky. The new name was for the local post office.

The name "Fountain Run" likely comes from the town's natural spring and stream. In colonial times, a small stream was often called a "run." The town was officially made a city by the state government in 1908.

The "Jimtown" Nickname

Even after the name changed to Fountain Run, many people still called the town "Jimtown." This was a shorter, friendly version of Jamestown. For example, a toll road built in 1866 was called the "Glasgow and Jimtown turnpike road."

This old road is now known as Kentucky Route 249. It was called the "Jimtown Road" for many years. Today, people often call it the "Roseville Road."

Famous musician Billy Vaughn wrote a song called "The Jimtown Road" in 1968. It was inspired by this historic route. The song was recorded by The Mills Brothers in 1969.

Early Schools and Records

In 1897, a private school called Jimtown Academy opened in Fountain Run. It taught students from elementary to higher levels. Later, Fountain Run had its own elementary and high schools before they joined with other schools.

Local historians have written books about Fountain Run's past. These books share traditional stories and family histories of the early settlers.
