The Story of Fourth Street Live!
How it All Began
Fourth Street Live! was created to make downtown Louisville exciting again. Before this, there were two other projects in the same spot: the Louisville Galleria (from the 1980s) and the River City Mall (from 1973). Both of these tried to bring life back to downtown. Fourth Street itself had been a main shopping and entertainment area in Louisville for a long time.
The idea of making Fourth Street a walking-only area goes back to 1943! It took many years to get the money for the River City Mall, which opened in 1971. This mall was quite long at first and was successful. But over time, cars were allowed back on the street, and the mall became smaller.
New Additions and Changes
On February 16, 2007, the Louisville Convention & Visitors Bureau opened a new Visitor Information Center at Fourth Street Live!. This center is a great place for visitors to learn about Kentucky's famous things, like Bourbon and Colonel Harland Sanders, who started Kentucky Fried Chicken. The center also has a cool video wall that shows videos about different events and fun places to visit.
Future Plans
On May 8, 2017, the Cordish Company announced that Fourth Street Live! would get even bigger. They planned to add "Spark Louisville," which is a new shared workspace. This means more businesses and people would be coming to the area.
