Frank Rost (born June 30, 1973) is a German former professional footballer. He played as a goalkeeper for many years.
Frank comes from a family of amazing athletes. His father, Peter, won a gold medal in handball at the 1980 Summer Olympics. His mother, Christina, also played handball. She won a silver medal at the 1976 Summer Olympics and a bronze medal at the 1980 Games.

Frank Rost's Club Career
Starting Out and Werder Bremen Years
Frank Rost was born in Karl-Marx-Stadt, Germany. He began his football journey at 1. FC Markkleeberg. This team played in the third division of German football.
His great playing caught the eye of Werder Bremen. They signed Frank in 1992. After playing for their reserve team, Werder Bremen II, he made his first appearance in the top German league, the Bundesliga, in the 1995–96 season. By the 1998–99 season, he became the main goalkeeper.
At the end of that season, Frank helped Bremen win the 1998–99 DFB-Pokal, which is a big German cup competition. The final match against Bayern Munich went to a penalty shootout. Frank even scored a penalty himself! Then, he saved a shot from a famous player, Lothar Matthäus, to win the cup for Bremen.
On March 31, 2002, Frank Rost became one of the few goalkeepers to score a goal during a Bundesliga game. He scored against Hansa Rostock. His goal was part of an amazing comeback. Werder Bremen was losing 3–1 but scored two goals in the last few minutes to win 4–3. At the end of the 2001–02 season, the team finished sixth. This meant they qualified for the UEFA Cup, an important European competition.
Time with Schalke 04

In July 2002, Frank Rost moved to Schalke 04. He was the main goalkeeper for Schalke for several years. However, in late 2006, a younger player named Manuel Neuer took his starting spot.
Playing for Hamburger SV
In January 2007, Frank Rost joined Hamburger SV. The team was struggling at the time, but Frank quickly became their top goalkeeper. He helped the team improve a lot, moving from last place to seventh place in the league.
On July 30, 2009, Frank played his 100th international club match. This was in a Europa League qualifying game. Hamburger SV won 4–0 against the Danish team Randers FC. Frank Rost holds the German record for the most appearances in the UEFA Cup and UEFA Europa League combined. He has played 90 matches in these competitions, which is the second-most overall behind Giuseppe Bergomi.
Before the 2010–11 season, Frank competed with a new goalkeeper, Jaroslav Drobný, for the number one spot. His teammates gave him the nickname "Frost." He left Hamburger SV at the end of that season. He hoped to play abroad or become a coach.
During his time in the Bundesliga, Frank Rost played in 426 league matches.
New York Red Bulls and Retirement
On July 13, 2011, news came out that Frank Rost would join the New York Red Bulls. This team plays in Major League Soccer (MLS) in the United States. The Red Bulls confirmed his signing that same day. In the 2011 season, Frank played in 11 regular season matches for New York. He managed to keep the opposing team from scoring in five of those games.
In January 2012, the club announced that they could not agree on a new contract with Frank. So, he did not return for the 2012 season. Frank Rost officially announced his retirement from football on February 19, 2012.
International Football for Germany
Frank Rost was part of the East Germany national team when he was younger. He played in four matches at the 1989 FIFA U-16 World Championship. Later, he played for the main Germany national team four times. His first game for Germany was against the United States in 2002.
