Club Career
Starting Out at Werder Bremen
Born in Karl-Marx-Stadt, Germany, Frank Rost began his football journey at a club called 1. FC Markkleeberg. His great goalkeeping skills got him noticed by a major German team, Werder Bremen, which he joined in 1992.
After playing for Werder Bremen's second team, Rost made his first appearance in the Bundesliga, Germany's top football league, during the 1995–96 season. By 1998, he had become the team's main goalkeeper.
One of his most famous moments came in the 1999 German Cup final. The game against Bayern Munich was tied and went to a penalty shootout. Rost not only scored a penalty kick himself, but he also saved a shot from the famous player Lothar Matthäus. His save won the cup for Werder Bremen!
Rost was also one of the very few goalkeepers to score a goal during a game. On March 31, 2002, his team was losing 3–1 to Hansa Rostock. In the final minutes, Rost ran up the field and scored, helping his team make an incredible comeback to win 4–3.
Time at Schalke 04

In July 2002, Rost moved to another top German club, Schalke 04. He was their number one goalkeeper for several years. In late 2006, a talented young keeper named Manuel Neuer took over his starting spot.
Joining Hamburger SV
In January 2007, Rost joined Hamburger SV. The team was struggling at the time, but he immediately became their main goalkeeper. He helped them climb from last place in the league all the way up to seventh.
Rost became the German player with the most appearances in the UEFA Cup and Europa League competitions, playing in 90 matches. His teammates gave him the nickname "Frost." He left the team in 2011 to look for new opportunities.
Over his career in Germany's Bundesliga, Rost played in 426 league matches.
Final Stop in New York
On July 13, 2011, Rost moved to the United States to play for the New York Red Bulls in Major League Soccer. In his one season there, he played 11 games and had five "clean sheets," which means he didn't let the other team score any goals.
Rost and the club couldn't agree on a new contract for the next season. He announced his retirement from professional football on February 19, 2012.
International Career
As a teenager, Rost played for the East Germany U-16 team at the 1989 FIFA U-16 World Championship.
Later, he played for the main Germany national team. He made his first appearance in 2002 in a match against the United States. In total, he played four games for his country.
