Frankfort is a small town located in Herkimer County, New York, in the United States. It was named after Lawrence (Lewis) Frank, one of its first settlers. The town of Frankfort also includes a village that shares the same name.
Frankfort is situated to the east of Utica. The famous Erie Canal runs along its northern edge. In 2020, about 7,011 people lived in Frankfort. This was a slight decrease from 7,636 people in 2010.

A Look Back: Frankfort's History
The first European settlers arrived in this area in 1723. They were German Palatines, who were people from Germany seeking safety from religious problems.
Early Challenges and Growth
During the French and Indian War, the area faced many attacks. French soldiers and their Native American allies caused settlers to leave. But before 1794, new land grants helped people resettle the area.
After the American Revolutionary War, Frankfort became its own town. It was formed from a part of the town of German Flatts. In 1798, a section of Frankfort was used to create part of the town of Deerfield.
Historic Landmarks
The Balloon Farm in Frankfort is a special place. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1998. This means it is an important historical site.

Natural Features
The western edge of the town is the border with Oneida County. The Mohawk River forms the northern border. Two creeks, Moyer Creek and Ferguson Creek, flow north through Frankfort into the Mohawk River.
Roads and Routes
New York State Route 5S runs next to the Mohawk River. New York State Route 171 crosses old NY 5S within the village of Frankfort. These roads help people travel through and around the town.

- Frankfort Gorge – A valley where Moyer Creek flows. It stretches from the southern town line to Frankfort village.
- Frankfort Hill – A spot in the western part of the town. The Frankfort Hill District No. 10 School is here. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2011.
- Gulph – A community near the southern town line.
- Harbor – A community in the northwestern part of the town, near the Mohawk River.
- Joslin Hill – A raised area southwest of Frankfort.
- Kinney Corners – A location on the southern town line. The Remington House here was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1997.
- Maggie's Bush – A community that no longer exists in the western part of Frankfort.
- North Frankfort – A location north of Frankfort village, close to the Mohawk River.
- Stewart Corners – A community in the western part of the town where two county roads meet.
- West Frankfort – A community near the western town line. It was first called "Four Mile Grocery."
Fun Times: The Herkimer County Fair
The Herkimer County Fair is a big event held every year in Frankfort. It lasts for six days and is a lot of fun for everyone!
Fair History
The fair started in 1841 as the Herkimer County Agricultural Society. In its early days, it moved from village to village. In the 1900s, the fair was in a different spot that later became a highway interchange. That location had a racetrack and grandstand, but they were destroyed by a fire.
The fair moved to Frankfort in 1950 and became an annual event. In 1958, it found a permanent home on Cemetery Hill in Frankfort. The fairgrounds now cover 26 acres. They have 10 permanent buildings, bathrooms, showers, a horse area, and bleachers for watching shows.

Many interesting people have come from Frankfort. Here are a few:
- Charles A. Budlong – He was born in Frankfort and later became a State Assemblyman in Wisconsin.
- Hiram Cronk – Born in Frankfort, he was the last surviving veteran of the War of 1812 when he passed away.
- Carl Edgar Myers – He owned a "balloon farm" business with Carlotta, the Lady Aeronaut.
- Abram B. Steele – A lawyer who also served as a member of the New York State Assembly.
- Rich Talarico – A writer, director, producer, and actor known for shows like Comedy Central's Key and Peele. He was born in Frankfort.
