Franklin's Early Days
Franklin was started by a group of Mormon pioneers on April 14, 1860. These brave settlers were led by Thomas S. Smart. At first, they thought they were building their new town in Utah Territory. But later, a survey in 1872 showed that Franklin was actually in Idaho Territory. It was about one mile north of the Utah border.
The town was named after Franklin Richards. He was an important leader in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Franklin holds a special place in history. It was the very first permanent European settlement in what is now Idaho. In 1864, the town's area was carefully planned into square blocks.
