Exploring Franklin Hills History

Franklin Hills is a neighborhood mainly made up of homes. It sits on hills just east of an area called Los Feliz Village. The Los Angeles Times newspaper once said it was a "diverse community." The Famous Shakespeare Bridge

Franklin Hills is home to the Shakespeare Bridge. This bridge crosses over a dip in the land that was once a stream. The stream was called Arroyo de la Sacatela. The bridge is a very old and beautiful part of the neighborhood.

East of the bridge, you can find the Franklin Hills public stairway system. These are a series of 14 staircases. They were built in the 1920s. Their purpose was to help people living on the hills walk down to the trolley lines below. This made it easier to get around.

Hollywood Studios in Franklin Hills

Prospect Studios is a famous place on Talmadge Street. It first opened in 1915 as the Vitagraph Studio. Later, it became the Warner Brothers Studios East Hollywood Annex. It was also home to the ABC Television Center and a local TV station, KABC. In 1996, it became part of the Walt Disney Company.

Brothers Roy and Walt Disney both lived in Franklin Hills. They owned homes at the corner of Lyric Avenue and St. George Street. This was in the late 1920s. They chose to live there so they could walk to their new animation studio. Their studio was just a few blocks away on Hyperion Avenue.
