Frasera puberulenta is a beautiful flowering plant. It is also known by its common name, Inyo frasera. This plant belongs to the gentian family.
You can find Inyo frasera growing in the high Sierra Nevada mountains of California. It also lives in the Inyo Mountains and White Mountains in eastern California. Sometimes, it even grows just across the border in Nevada. This plant prefers to live in dry mountain forests.
What Does Inyo Frasera Look Like?
Frasera puberulenta is a perennial herb. This means it lives for more than two years. It grows several stems that are a bit hairy. These stems can be about 10 to 30 centimeters (4 to 12 inches) tall.
Leaves and Flowers
The leaves of the Inyo frasera are green. They have white edges and feel fuzzy on their undersides.
The flowers grow in a group at the top of the stem. This group is called an inflorescence. It looks like an open cluster of flowers, known as a panicle.
Each flower has four pointed parts called sepals. These sepals form the outer layer of the flower, called the calyx. Inside, there are four pointed petals. These petals form the corolla. Each petal is about one centimeter long.
The petals are greenish and have small purple dots. Near the bottom of each petal, there is a fringe of tiny hairs. Inside the flower, you'll find four stamens. Stamens are the male parts of the flower. They have large tips called anthers. In the very center, there is an ovary. This is the part that will develop into seeds.
