Rick Larson became interested in the Christmas Star. He wanted to make a star for his yard decorations. He used a special astronomy software called Starry Night. This program helps you see how stars and planets move in the sky.

Larson got really curious about the Star of Bethlehem. He read an article by astronomer Craig Chester. Chester thought that certain planetary events in 2 BC could explain what the Magi (wise men) saw. Larson agrees that astronomical events between 3 and 2 BC match the Bible's story. He also believes that King Herod the Great died in 1 BC. Other experts, like astronomers David Hughes and Mike Molnar, think Herod died in 4 BC.

Larson looked closely at the Bible's story in the Gospel of Matthew, chapter 2. He found nine important things about the Star of Bethlehem:

  • It showed a birth.
  • It showed kingship.
  • It was linked to the Jewish people.
  • It appeared "in the East."
  • King Herod did not know about it.
  • It appeared at a specific time.
  • It lasted for a while.
  • It guided the Magi as they traveled south from Jerusalem to Bethlehem.
  • It stopped over Bethlehem.

Larson wrote the script for The Star of Bethlehem. He was also a co-executive producer with Stephen McEveety. McEveety has worked on famous films like The Passion of the Christ and Braveheart.

The Christ Quake Film

After his work on the Star of Bethlehem, Larson started a second film. It is called The Christ Quake. This film tries to find real proof of the earthquake mentioned in the Bible. The Bible says an earthquake happened when Christ died on the cross. Matthew 27:51 says, "and the earth did quake, and the rocks rent." The DVD for The Christ Quake came out on May 21, 2019. It is available in both English and Spanish. Larson wrote the script and was the executive producer for this film too.

God of Heaven and Earth Film

On November 5, 2023, a new film called God of Heaven and Earth was released in theaters. This documentary explains both the Bethlehem star story and the earthquake at Christ's crucifixion. Larson's presentation included evidence from astronomy and geology. He also interviewed experts in both of these fields.

Rick Larson's Life

Larson studied with Francis Schaeffer in Switzerland. He was part of the L'Abri Christian community there.

He also started a group called the STAR project. This is a nonprofit organization. It works to bring Christians from different churches together. On July 28, 2016, Rick Larson's wife, Julie Davison Larson, shared a message from him. He said that she was writing the music for The Christ Quake film. He also joked, "I'm the one that cooks dinner when she is scoring."
