Fredricka Whitfield (born May 31, 1965) is a well-known American journalist and news anchor. She helps deliver the news to people across the country. Fredricka is famous for hosting the weekend show CNN Newsroom.
She works from CNN's main offices in Atlanta. Sometimes, she also fills in for other anchors on shows like At This Hour With Kate Bolduan.
Early Life and Education
Fredricka Whitfield was born on May 31, 1965. Her father, Mal Whitfield, was a famous American Olympic runner. He competed in middle-distance races.
Fredricka went to Paint Branch High School in Burtonsville, Maryland. She graduated from high school in 1983. After that, she studied journalism at Howard University. She earned her bachelor's degree in 1987. While at Howard, she was a news anchor for the campus radio station, WHUR. In 2002, Howard University recognized her as a top graduate from their School of Communications.
Fredricka Whitfield's Career in News
After college, Fredricka started her career at different TV stations. She worked at WPLG-TV in Miami and NewsChannel 8 in Washington, D.C.. She also worked at KTVT-TV in Dallas and WTNH in New Haven, Connecticut. Her early career also included time at WCIV in Charleston, South Carolina.
In 1995, she joined NBC News as a correspondent. She reported from Atlanta for NBC Nightly News until 2001. Fredricka also worked on other NBC news shows, like Today. She was an anchor for morning and afternoon news, and she found stories as a reporter.
Fredricka joined CNN in 2002. Since then, she has covered many important events. She was the first anchor to announce the sad news of Ronald Reagan's passing. She also reported on the huge 2004 Indian Ocean earthquake and tsunami. Fredricka reported from the Persian Gulf during Operation Iraqi Freedom. In 2020, she was the first CNN anchor to share the news of Kobe Bryant's passing in a helicopter crash.

Fredricka Whitfield is married to John Glenn. He works as a director of photography for The Atlanta Journal-Constitution newspaper. They got married in 1999.
Fredricka and John have three children. Their first son was born in January 2005. In November 2012, they welcomed twins, a daughter named Nola and a son named Gilbert.
