Frewville is a small suburb located in Adelaide, a major city in South Australia. It's about three kilometres south-east of Adelaide's city centre, often called the CBD (Central Business District).

The suburb gets its name from an early settler named James Frew. Frewville is part of the City of Burnside, which is a local government area. The suburb has a unique triangular shape. It is bordered by Flemington Street to the north, Conyngham Street to the east, and Glen Osmond Road to the south-west.

A Look Back: Frewville's History

Frewville was once part of a large farming area. This land was first sold to a person named William Giles. Today, this area is known as the suburb of Fullarton. On older maps, Frewville appeared on both sides of Glen Osmond Road.

Who Was James Frew?

James Frew (born around 1804, died 1878) was an important early settler. He arrived in South Australia in June 1839 with his wife, Jane, and their daughter, Ellen. His brothers also came on the same ship.

In 1847, James Frew bought a part of the land from William Giles. He then divided this land into smaller blocks in 1865 and called the new area "Frewville." He also bought another piece of land in 1849. He divided this land too, naming it "Fullarton" after his wife's family name.

In 1853, James Frew paid £2,200 for a large piece of land, about 130 acres. This happened after Glen Osmond Road was built right through the middle of the area.

James Frew also had a son, James Frew Jr. (born 1840, died 1877). He was born in Adelaide and went to school there. James Frew Jr. was part of John McDouall Stuart's famous expedition in 1861-1862. This expedition was the first to travel all the way across Australia from south to north. Sadly, James Frew Jr. died at the age of 36. He was buried in the West Terrace Cemetery.

Frewville's Development as a Village

When Frewville was first settled, it was used for grazing horses by the early colonists. But in 1854, the village of Frewville was officially planned out. A year later, in 1855, a blacksmith opened a shop near Adelaide, and the Frewville Inn (a type of hotel) was built on Glen Osmond Road.

Over the next few years, a weighbridge was set up by the Hollard family. One of Frewville's streets is named after them today. Around this time, there was also a large, two-storey wooden house. It was set back from Glen Osmond Road, and tall pine trees were planted along the road.

In 1881, most of Frewville was divided into the property sizes we see today. The suburb became home to new types of workers, like electricians and gas-fitters.

In the 1930s, Frewville had a very unusual landmark. It was a car wrecking yard on Glen Osmond Road that had a Model "T" Ford car body stuck high up in a tree!

Later, in the 1960s and 1970s, a big national delivery company called IPEC had its main office and distribution centre in Frewville. That building has since been divided into smaller offices.

On the northern side of Frewville, near the Glenside hospital, a company that did chemical research built a large two-storey building. This building caught fire in the 1980s. Today, it is the main office for the Royal District Nursing Service (South Australia), which provides nursing care to people in their homes.

The McDonald's restaurant on Glen Osmond Road was also one of the very first McDonald's restaurants to open in Adelaide.

Frewville's Natural Surroundings

Frewville is a leafy suburb with many trees. While it doesn't have many large parks or reserves within its borders, there are more green spaces nearby. For example, Webb Oval is in Glenunga, right on Frewville's eastern edge.

It's easy to get around Frewville using public transport. Buses run along Glen Osmond Road very often, about every 15 minutes until 6 PM. There are also many other bus routes in the city. These buses are provided by Adelaide Metro.

However, most people in Frewville still use cars to get around. Frewville is in a great spot for drivers. Residents can reach Adelaide's city centre using several different routes. They can also get to the Adelaide Hills easily by taking Glen Osmond Road and the South Eastern Freeway.

Who Lives in Frewville?

Frewville is home to many families and people who have retired. Most residents have an Anglo-Celtic background. Some parts of the suburb are quite wealthy. However, because Glen Osmond Road forms one of its borders, a large part of Frewville is used for shops and businesses.
