Fruitport is a small village located in Muskegon County, Michigan, in the United States. In 2020, about 1,103 people lived there. It is part of Fruitport Charter Township. The township also provides water and sewer services for the village.

History of Fruitport

Fruitport was started in 1868 by Edward L. Craw. He first named it "Crawville." A year later, it was renamed "Fruitport." This happened because the Pere Marquette Railroad built a station there. The area was known for growing lots of fruit, and it was also a port. Fruitport officially became a village in 1891.

Over the years, people in Fruitport have voted several times on whether to keep the village as it is or to dissolve it. In 2005, residents voted on this idea again. While many wanted to dissolve the village, they did not reach the two-thirds majority needed for it to happen. Similar votes also took place in 1990 and 1998.

Geography and Location

Fruitport is in the southern part of Muskegon County. It is also in the southern part of Fruitport Charter Township. To the south, it shares a border with Ottawa County.

The city of Muskegon is about 10 miles (16 km) to the northwest. Grand Haven is about 8 miles (13 km) to the southwest. Fruitport is located at the top end of Spring Lake. This lake connects to Lake Michigan through the Grand River at Grand Haven.

The U.S. Census Bureau says the village covers a total area of about 1.02 square miles (2.63 square kilometers). Most of this area, about 0.91 square miles (2.35 square kilometers), is land. The remaining 0.11 square miles (0.28 square kilometers), or 10.8%, is water.

Fruitport in 2010

Based on the census from 2010, Fruitport had 1,093 people living in 440 households. About 312 of these were families. The population density was about 1201 people per square mile (463.7 per square kilometer). There were 476 homes in the village.

Most of the people in Fruitport were White (95.8%). A smaller number were African American (1.5%), Native American (0.2%), or Asian (0.4%). About 1.1% were from other races, and 1.1% were from two or more races. About 2.0% of the population identified as Hispanic or Latino.

Out of the 440 households, 31.6% had children under 18 living with them. Most households (55.9%) were married couples living together. About 10.2% had a female head of household with no husband present. And 4.8% had a male head of household with no wife present. About 29.1% of households were not families.

About 23.0% of all households had only one person living there. And 10.7% had someone living alone who was 65 years old or older. On average, there were 2.48 people per household and 2.91 people per family.

The average age of people in the village was 43.6 years. About 22.5% of residents were under 18. About 6.1% were between 18 and 24 years old. The largest group, 31.6%, was between 45 and 64 years old. About 16.3% were 65 years or older. The population was almost evenly split between males (50.2%) and females (49.8%).

Education in Fruitport

The village of Fruitport is served by the Fruitport Community Schools district. This school district also covers Fruitport Charter Township. The schools that serve the village include Fruitport High School, Fruitport Middle School, and Edgewood Elementary School. There is also a private school nearby called Calvary Christian School.

Climate and Weather

The climate in Fruitport has big differences in temperature between seasons. Summers are usually warm to hot and can be humid. Winters are cold, and sometimes very cold. According to the Köppen Climate Classification system, Fruitport has a humid continental climate. This type of climate is often shown as "Dfb" on climate maps.
