History of Jurong West
Jurong West was first known as Peng Kang. This name came from the gambier farms along Sungei Jurong. In the mid-1900s, the area had several brickworks, palm oil farms, and plant nurseries.
At that time, only Boon Lay and Taman Jurong had public housing. Jurong West stayed mostly undeveloped until 1984. That's when the HDB started planning a new town there. Jurong West was divided into nine smaller areas. The long-term plan was to build 94,000 public and private homes.
The first apartment blocks, called flats, were finished in Taman Jurong in 1963. By November 2004, about 71,522 homes were ready. As of March 2018, Jurong West has 74,301 HDB homes.
Geography and Subzones
Jurong West is mainly a residential town. It is located west of Tengah New Town in the western part of Singapore. The Urban Redevelopment Authority (URA) defines it as part of the West Region.
The town is surrounded by major roads and waterways. The Pan Island Expressway (PIE) is to the north. Sungei Jurong (Jurong River) and Jurong Lake are to the east. The Ayer Rajah Expressway (AYE) is to the south. Benoi Road and Upper Jurong Road are to the west.
Jurong West Town Centre is found in Jurong West Central. There is also an industrial area, part of the Jurong Industrial Estate, south of Boon Lay Way and Upper Jurong Road. Another industrial area is being built in Wenya. This is part of the Jurong Innovation District.

Jurong West New Town is divided into nine smaller areas:
- Boon Lay
- Chin Bee
- Hong Kah
- Jurong West Central

Population in Jurong West
As of 2018, Jurong West has a population of 266,720 people. Most of these people are working adults. The area with the most residents is Yunnan, with 68,840 people. Jurong West Central is close behind with 65,720 residents.
However, Chin Bee has only ten residents. Safti has no people living there at all. Jurong West covers about 9.87 square kilometers (3.81 square miles). Only 4.8 square kilometers (1.85 square miles) are for homes. This means Jurong West is very crowded, with about 27,000 people per square kilometer.
Parks and Recreation
Jurong West has two main rivers, Sungei Jurong and Sungei Lanchar. Green paths run along their banks. These paths connect housing areas to neighborhood parks like Jurong Central Park. They also link to the Jurong West Sports Centre, Jurong West Stadium, and Frontier Community Centre.
These park connectors also link to the Chinese Garden in Jurong East New Town and the Bukit Batok Town Park in the north. This helps people in Jurong West enjoy more outdoor activities. Jurong Central Park, located in Kian Teck, is a large green space behind Boon Lay MRT station.
The main public transport facilities in Jurong West were built as the homes were being developed. The elevated tracks for the East West MRT line were built while public housing blocks were going up in the 1980s. These facilities are all connected in one large building complex. This allows people to easily go from Boon Lay MRT station to Boon Lay Bus Interchange, The Centris condominium, and Jurong Point shopping centre.
Getting Around Jurong West
City planners want public transport to be the main way people travel. The Singapore government uses public transport to lower pollution from too many cars. Jurong West is a key area for the Urban Redevelopment Authority to achieve this goal.
Since Jurong West is quite far from the city centre, an efficient and fast public transport system is important. This also helps the government reduce the number of cars on the roads.
