The beautiful forest area here, called Funk's Grove, is so important that it's been named a National Natural Landmark. This means it's a really unique natural spot!

The Natural History of Funks Grove

Illinois is known for its huge open grasslands called the Grand Prairie. But scattered within this prairie are "groves." These are small patches of land where trees can grow tall and strong. This happens because the land conditions here help protect the trees from prairie fires.

Creeks and Trees

One such grove is found along Timber Creek. This small stream flows into Sugar Creek. Eventually, these creeks become part of the Sangamon River system, which then joins the Illinois River.

The banks of Timber Creek were once covered with thick forests. You would have seen many white oaks, bur oaks, and sugar maple trees. The white oak is even the state tree of Illinois!

Maple Syrup Production

Long ago, the local Illini Native Americans used the sugar maple trees. They would collect sap in the springtime to make delicious maple syrup and maple sugar.

Early European settlers also loved maple sweets. A man named Isaac Funk settled here in 1824. His family, the Funk family, started selling their special "sirup" (syrup) in 1891. Even today, the Funk family still manages and harvests much of the grove.

Funks Grove Today

A part of Funk's Grove, about 18.6 acres, was officially named the Funk's Grove Nature Preserve in 1985. Most of the grove is still privately owned.

Changes in the Forest

Over time, the types of trees in Funk's Grove are changing. This is partly because of "fire suppression," which means prairie fires are stopped. These fires used to help the original oak trees reproduce naturally. Now, the oak trees are not growing back as much.

A Stop on Route 66

Funks Grove is still a popular place for people traveling on the historic U.S. Route 66. Signs in McLean County guide travelers through the grove. There's also a rest stop nearby on Interstate 55 at Illinois Milepost 149. This rest stop has cool items and information about the grove.

Funks Grove Nature Spaces

Funks Grove Nature Spaces is a special place that opened in October 2004. It is run by a non-profit organization. It was first called Sugar Grove Nature Center but changed its name in April 2024.

This center has a recreated tallgrass prairie and an old-growth forest. You can walk on trails to see native plants and local wildlife. There are also fun nature play areas and spots to watch birds and other animals. It's a great place to learn about nature!
