Early Life and New Ideas
Gabino Barreda was a brave young man. He volunteered to defend his country during the Mexican–American War. After the war, he went to Paris to study medicine. He lived there from 1847 to 1851.
While in Paris, he learned about positivism. This was a new way of thinking developed by Auguste Comte. Positivism focused on using science and logic to understand the world. When Barreda returned to Mexico City, he brought these ideas with him. He began teaching positivism in Guanajuato from 1863 to 1867. This was until the rule of Emperor Maximilian ended.
Shaping Education in Mexico
In 1867, President Benito Juárez asked Gabino Barreda to lead a special group. This group was in charge of improving education in Mexico. Barreda used this chance to put positivism into higher education.
The National Preparatory School
Barreda's group helped create the National Preparatory School. This school, known as Escuela Nacional Preparatoria (ENP), was very important. It prepared students for university studies. Gabino Barreda became the first director of the ENP and led it for ten years.
A New Role
Barreda was a close friend and supporter of President Juárez. He also supported Juárez's successor, Sebastián Lerdo de Tejada. When Porfirio Díaz became president, things changed. In 1878, the Díaz government asked Barreda to leave the ENP. He was then sent to be the Mexican ambassador to the German Empire. This was an important job, but it kept him far from Mexican politics.
Lasting Influence
Gabino Barreda had a big impact on many thinkers in Mexico. His ideas helped shape education during the time of Porfirio Díaz.
Today, he is still seen as a very important person in education in Mexico. Many consider him one of the founders of the Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México. The top student in each major's class at the university receives a special medal. This medal is named in honor of Gabino Barreda.
