Galt is a city located in Sacramento County, California. It is part of the larger Sacramento metropolitan area. In 2010, about 23,647 people lived there. This number grew from 19,472 people in 2000.

History of Galt
Galt was started in 1869 by the Central Pacific Railroad. It was part of building the first transcontinental railroad across the United States. The town got its name from Galt, Ontario, which was a city in Canada. This was the hometown of a local rancher named John McFarland.

The city covers a total area of about 5.9 square miles (15.3 square kilometers). Most of this area is land, with a very small part being water. Galt is surrounded by areas that are not officially part of any city, in both Sacramento and San Joaquin Counties.

Galt has grown quite a bit over the years. In 2010, the city had a population of 23,647 people. Most of the people lived in homes. The population included people from many different backgrounds. About 66% were White, and about 43% were Hispanic or Latino.

Galt has its own weekly newspaper called The Galt Herald. It has been publishing news since 1909. The same family has owned and run the newspaper since 1959.

Public schools in Galt are managed by two different districts. The Galt Joint Union Elementary School District takes care of elementary and middle schools. The Galt Joint Union High School District runs the high schools in the city.
