Galvarino is a town and a commune in Chile. It is located in the Araucanía Region, specifically in Cautín Province. A commune is like a local government area.
The town is named after a brave Mapuche warrior called Galvarino. It was started on April 22, 1882. General Gregorio Urrutia founded it as a fort next to the Quillem River. This happened during the occupation of Araucanía, a time when Chile expanded its territory.
Most of the people living in Galvarino are from the original Mapuche indigenous groups. Many Swiss colonizers also settled in the area. The main way people make a living here is through forestry. Large parts of the land are used to grow trees like eucalyptus and pines.
