Ganderbal is a town and a local government area in the Ganderbal District of Jammu and Kashmir, India. It serves as the main town for the Ganderbal district. Located in Central Kashmir, Ganderbal sits at an average height of about 1,619 meters (5,312 feet) above sea level. It is known for its beautiful scenery and many interesting places to visit.
Ganderbal shares its borders with several other districts. To the south, it is next to Srinagar District. To the north, you'll find Bandipora District. In the northeast, it borders Kargil, which is part of the Indian union territory of Ladakh. To the southeast, it's connected to Anantnag District, and to the southwest, it borders Baramulla District. The town is led by local officials, including a District Magistrate and a Superintendent of Police. One of the most famous spots in Ganderbal is Sonamarg. The important Amarnath Ji Yatra pilgrimage also passes through this district.

Ganderbal is found at the coordinates 34°14′N 74°47′E / 34.23°N 74.78°E. Its average height above sea level is 1,619 meters (5,312 feet). The district is divided into six smaller administrative areas called Tehsils. These include Ganderbal, Kangan, Lar, Tulmulla, Gund, and Wakura.
Water and Power in Ganderbal
The Sind River is a very important river that flows through Ganderbal district. It is a major branch of the Jhelum River. The water from the Sind River is mainly used for two key purposes:
- Irrigation: It helps farmers water their crops.
- Hydroelectricity: It is used to create electricity.
There are three power stations on the Sind River that generate electricity:

Ganderbal also has a stadium that is known for hosting day-night sports matches. The only Physical Education College in the region is located in Gadoora village, not far from the main district town.

According to the 2011 India census, Ganderbal had a population of 297,446 people. Slightly more than half of the population (53.36%) were males, and 46.64% were females. The average literacy rate in Ganderbal was 58.04%. This means that about 58 out of every 100 people could read and write. This rate was lower than India's national average of 74.04% at the time. For males, the literacy rate was higher at 68.85%, while for females, it was 45.71%. About 17.01% of the population was under 6 years old.
