Early Life and Education
Gavin Hood was born in Johannesburg, South Africa, and grew up in the Hillbrow area. He attended St Stithians College for his schooling. Later, he earned a law degree from the University of the Witwatersrand. In 1991, he decided to follow his passion for movies and went to a film school in California to study screenwriting and directing.
Directing Movies and Winning Awards
When Gavin Hood returned to South Africa, he started his directing career by making short educational dramas for the South African Department of Health. His first commercial short film was The Storekeeper (1998). For his early work, he received an Artes Award.
First Feature Films
Hood helped produce and wrote the script for his first full-length movie, A Reasonable Man (1999). This film tells the story of an accidental killing. He then directed the Polish language film In Desert and Wilderness (2001) when the original director became ill.
Success with Tsotsi
After these projects, Hood directed the highly praised crime drama film Tsotsi (2005). This movie became a huge success, winning the 2005 Academy Award for Best International Feature Film. This was his first Academy Award. Tsotsi was also nominated for the Golden Globe for Best Foreign Language Film in 2006. Gavin Hood was also nominated for the 2005 Non-European Film—Prix Screen International at the European Film Awards for his work on Tsotsi.
In 2000, Variety magazine, a well-known entertainment publication, named him as one of its "Ten Directors to Watch." This meant they saw him as a rising star in the film industry.
Hollywood Projects
Gavin Hood then directed Rendition (2007), which was his first major Hollywood movie. He also directed X-Men Origins: Wolverine (2009), a film based on the popular Marvel Comics character, Wolverine. Hugh Jackman played Wolverine in the movie, just as he had in the other X-Men films.
Before X-Men Origins: Wolverine was released, Gavin Hood spoke about how the movie had deeper meanings. He explained that movies that only show simple "good versus evil" can be misleading. He believed that even heroes can have a dark side, and it's important to understand that. He liked that Wolverine's character recognized his own ability to do bad things, which made the character more interesting.
In 2011, Hood started working on Ender's Game, based on the novel by Orson Scott Card. He wrote a version of the screenplay and directed the film, which was released in U.S. theaters on 1 November 2013.
Hood also directed and acted in Eye in the Sky, a movie released on 15 September 2015 at the Toronto International Film Festival in Toronto, Canada.
His 2019 British film, Official Secrets, was written, directed, and executive produced by Hood. It was based on the true story of Katharine Gun, who revealed secret information about the Iraq War.
Personal Life
Throughout his career, Gavin Hood has lived in different places, moving back and forth between South Africa, the United States, and the United Kingdom.
