Sir Gavyn Farr Arthur (born September 13, 1951 – died May 16, 2016) was a British judge and an important leader in the City of London. He served as the 675th Lord Mayor of London from 2002 to 2003. This is a very old and respected role in London's financial heart.

Early Life and Education
Gavyn Arthur was the only son of Major Leonard Arthur and Raina Farr. He went to Harrow School, a famous boarding school. After that, he studied at Christ Church, Oxford, which is a college at the University of Oxford.
His family had a special connection to a title called a baronetcy. From 2010 until he passed away, Sir Gavyn was next in line to inherit the Arthur family title.
A Career in Law and Public Service
Sir Gavyn Arthur became a barrister in 1975. This means he was qualified to argue cases in court. He joined a group called the Middle Temple, which is one of the four Inns of Court in London where barristers are trained. In 2001, he became a "Bencher" there, which is a senior position.
He worked as a barrister for many years. Later, he became a Recorder in 2001, which is a part-time judge. In 2007, he became a Circuit Judge, a full-time judge who hears cases in different courts. In 2008, he was promoted to a Deputy High Court Judge.
Serving the City of London
Sir Gavyn was elected as an Alderman for the Cripplegate area of the City of London in 1991. He held this position until 2005. Aldermen are important leaders in the City's local government.
He also served as an Aldermanic Sheriff from 1998 to 1999. This is another historic role in the City of London.
Becoming Lord Mayor
From 2002 to 2003, Sir Gavyn Arthur held the very important position of Lord Mayor of London. As Lord Mayor, he was also the Chancellor of City University London. He received an honorary degree from the university for his work.
He was also a leader in several old and respected groups called "Worshipful Companies" and "Guilds." These included the Worshipful Company of Gardeners, the Worshipful Company of Wax Chandlers, and the Guild of Freemen of the City of London.
Sir Gavyn Arthur passed away suddenly in May 2016.
Honours and Awards
Sir Gavyn Arthur received many awards and honours from different countries for his service.
In the United Kingdom:
- He was made a Knight Bachelor by the Queen in 2004. This honour recognized his great work for the City of London.
- He also became a Knight of Justice in the Venerable Order of St John in 2003.
From other countries:
- In 2003, the President of Georgia gave him the Order of Honour of the Republic of Georgia.
- He was recognized by the Royal Order of Francis I in 2006 and later promoted to a higher rank in 2011.
- In 2013, King Michael I of Romania appointed him a Knight Commander of the Royal Order of the Crown.
- In 2016, he received the Medal of the President of the Slovak Republic. This was for his efforts in building good relationships between Britain and Slovakia.
