George Trenholm Allen (born July 27, 1914 – died March 27, 2000) was a Canadian professional ice hockey player. He mostly played as a left wing for the Chicago Black Hawks in the National Hockey League (NHL) from 1938 to 1947. George was born in Bayfield, New Brunswick, but he grew up in Kerrobert, Saskatchewan.
George Allen's Hockey Journey
George Allen started his hockey career playing for different teams in eastern Canada. He later joined the North Battleford Beavers. With this team, he reached the Allan Cup final in 1937, which is a big championship for amateur hockey in Canada. His team lost that final game.
The next year, George played a few games for the Sudbury Tigers. Soon after, the New York Rangers signed him. They sent him to their "farm team," the New Haven Eagles. A farm team is like a training ground where players develop their skills before joining the main team.
During the 1938–39 NHL season, some Rangers players got injured. This gave George his chance to play in the NHL! In his very first game with the Rangers, he scored an amazing 3 points (two goals and one assist). This set a record for the most points by a Rangers player in their debut game, a record later matched by another player in 2003.
After that season, George's rights were sold to the Chicago Black Hawks on May 17, 1939.
Playing for the Black Hawks
With the Black Hawks, George Allen became a regular player. In his first season with them, he was the fifth-highest scorer on the team. His best season for ranking was 1940-41, when he was the second-highest scorer for the team. He was also third in scoring during the playoffs that year.
George's best season for total points was 1943-44. He scored 41 points, which was the fifth-highest on his team. He also ranked third in playoff scoring that year. However, his team, the Black Hawks, lost to the Montreal Canadiens in the Stanley Cup Finals.
George missed the 1944–45 NHL season because of rules about crossing the Canada–United States border during wartime. He played one more year in Chicago. Before the 1946-47 NHL season, George was traded to the Montreal Canadiens. After that season, he returned to the Black Hawks.
George played a couple more seasons in minor leagues, but he never played in the NHL again. In the 1950–51 season, he spent one year as a player-coach for the Regina Capitals. This meant he played on the team and also helped coach them.
Family in Hockey
George Allen's brother, Viv Allen, also played ice hockey. Viv played 6 games for the New York Americans in 1940. However, the two brothers never played against each other in an NHL game. After their hockey careers ended, George and Viv went into farming together.
