George did not get enough votes to go straight to the final round from his group. But he got a second chance in the "wildcard" round. The show's judge, Simon Cowell, chose him to be a finalist. During this time, a TV station in New Orleans showed specials about George's family cheering him on.
On May 5, 2004, George was voted off the show. He finished in fifth place. He had sung two songs during "big band" week: "Cheek to Cheek" and "What a Wonderful World".
