Relations George Monro (son)

George Munro of Auchinbowie was a Scottish military officer from the late 1600s. He was the first person in his family to be known as "Munro of Auchinbowie." His family came from the Munro of Milntown line.

George Munro's Military Service

George Munro had an important military career, fighting in major conflicts of his time.

Fighting in the Jacobite Rising

During the Jacobite rising of 1689, George Munro was a Captain. He fought for the Scottish Covenanters. The Covenanters were a group who supported the Protestant Church of Scotland. They were against the Jacobites, who wanted to bring back King James VII (James II of England) to the throne.

The Battle of Dunkeld

Captain Munro fought bravely at the Battle of Dunkeld. His unit was the Cameronian Regiment. This battle was very tough. The Cameronian regiment had about 1,200 men. They were greatly outnumbered by around 5,000 Jacobite soldiers.

The battle lasted for four to five hours. Early on, the Colonel of the Cameronian Regiment was killed. The Major was also wounded. This meant that Captain George Munro had to take command. It is said that his soldiers had to melt lead from house roofs to make more ammunition. In the end, the Jacobites were defeated.

Promotions and Later Battles

After his brave actions at the Battle of Dunkeld, Captain George Munro was promoted to Major. He was then put in charge of his own company of soldiers in Perthshire. Later, as a Major in Sir Charles Graham's Regiment of Foot, he fought in the Nine Years' War. He took part in the Siege of Namur in 1695.

George Munro's Family Life

George Munro married Margaret Bruce in 1693. Margaret was from the Bruce of Auchinbowie family.

Becoming Laird of Auchinbowie

Margaret's older sister, Janet Bruce, inherited the Auchinbowie property from their father. However, Janet faced many financial problems. In 1702, Janet Bruce sold the property to her brother-in-law, Major George Munro. This is how George Munro became the Laird of Auchinbowie.

George Munro's Children

George and Margaret had several children:

  • Alexander Munro, who became the 2nd of Auchinbowie.
  • Margaret Munro, who was born in 1707.
  • George Monro, who was born around 1700 in Ireland. This younger George Monro became a famous British Army officer. He is known for defending Fort William Henry in 1757 during the Seven Years' War (also known as the French and Indian War). His story is featured in the famous novel and films called The Last of the Mohicans.
