George Sullivan Dodge (August 3, 1838 – August 24, 1881) was an important person during the American Civil War. He was an officer in the Union Army. After the war, he worked as a United States consul in Bremen, Germany. He was also a merchant.

Early Life and War Service

George S. Dodge was born on August 4, 1838. His hometown was Irasburg, Vermont. He grew up to be a successful merchant.

When the American Civil War started, Dodge joined the Union Army. He became a Colonel. He worked in the Quartermaster Department. This department was in charge of supplying the army. They made sure soldiers had food, clothes, and equipment.

Later in the war, he became the Chief Quartermaster. He worked for the Army of the James. He served under generals like Benjamin Butler and Edward Ord.

Becoming a General

On January 26, 1865, President Abraham Lincoln chose Dodge for a special honor. He was named a brevet brigadier general. This means he was given the rank as an honor for his brave service. The United States Senate approved this on February 14, 1865.

Dodge earned this honor for his quick actions at the Second Battle of Fort Fisher. He made sure Union soldiers got the supplies they needed. This helped them win the battle. After this, he also took part in the Battle of Wilmington.

After the War

After the Civil War ended, George Dodge continued to serve his country. From 1866 to 1869, he worked as the United States Consul in Bremen, Germany. A consul is like a representative for their country in another land. They help their country's citizens and promote trade.

Dodge passed away on August 24, 1881, in Oakland, California. He was first buried there. Later, his body was moved and reburied in Newton Cemetery in Newton, New Jersey.
