Lieutenant Colonel George Thomas d'Aguilar was a British Army officer. He was born on August 11, 1783, and passed away on October 9, 1839. He served in the British military during an important time in history.

His Early Life and Family

George Thomas d'Aguilar was born in Oxford, England. His parents were Benjamin and Jane d'Aguilar. He was baptized into the Anglican church in May 1784.

George was related to some notable people. He was a descendant of Baron Diego Pereira d'Aguilar. He was also a cousin of George Charles D'Aguilar.

He married Catherine Burton, and they had eight children together. One of their children was Rev. John Burton D'Aguilar, who became a Vicar in Ashwick. Catherine, George's wife, was also the aunt of the famous explorer Sir Richard Francis Burton.

A Military Career

George Thomas d'Aguilar began his military journey at a young age. On November 14, 1790, he traveled to Calcutta (now Kolkata) in India. There, he joined the first Battalion of the 13th Regiment of Foot in Varanasi.

He soon received a special permission to serve the East India Company. This company was very powerful in India at the time. D'Aguilar then moved to Madras (now Chennai). He was assigned to the 13th Native Infantry of Madras.

In August 1798, he joined the H.M.S 78th. He was promoted to Lieutenant on May 29, 1800, while in Gorakhpur.

In 1802, he wanted to join the French campaign in Egypt. However, his request was not approved. He continued to serve in India. He commanded five companies at Mundla from April 23 to 27, 1818. He served under General J. Watson.

Later, he was allowed to join the 1st battalion of the 13th regiment. In August 1818, he traveled to Ceylon (now Sri Lanka) and then to Barrackpore. However, conflicts in those areas ended quickly. He then returned to his main unit in Aligarh.

George Thomas d'Aguilar was the grandfather of Francis d'Aguilar. He passed away in 1839 in Calcutta, India.
