Who Are Georgian Americans?
Georgian Americans are a part of the diverse population of the United States. They bring their unique culture, traditions, and language from Georgia. Many Georgian Americans speak Georgian, which is the official language of Georgia. They also often speak English and sometimes Russian.
A Look at Their History
It's hard to know exactly how many Georgian Americans live in the U.S. This is because in the 1800s and early 1900s, when many people immigrated, U.S. records didn't always list specific ethnic groups. Instead, they often grouped people from the Russian Empire together. Georgia was part of the Russian Empire until 1918. So, many Georgians who came to America during that time might have been listed simply as "Russian" or from the "Russian Empire."
Famous Georgian Americans
Even though their exact numbers are unknown, Georgian Americans have made important contributions to American society. Some have become very well-known in different fields.
For example, George Balanchine was a famous Georgian American. He is often called the "father of American ballet" and helped create the New York City Ballet. His work changed how ballet was seen and performed in the U.S.
Another notable Georgian American was General John Shalikashvili. He held very high positions in the U.S. military. He was the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, which is the highest-ranking military officer in the U.S. armed forces. He also served as the Supreme Allied Commander in Europe for NATO, a military alliance.
