Gerald Andrews Hausman, born on October 13, 1945, is a fantastic storyteller and a writer who has won many awards. He writes books about Native Americans, animals, old myths, and the culture of the West Indies. Gerald Hausman has written over seventy books for both kids and adults!

About Gerald Hausman

Gerald Hausman was born in Baltimore, Maryland. He grew up in New Jersey and Massachusetts. Later, he moved to New Mexico for college. He studied English Literature at New Mexico Highlands University in Las Vegas, New Mexico.

After college, Gerald married Loretta "Lorry" Wright. They moved to Lenox, Massachusetts, where he taught creative writing and English at the Windsor Mountain School. Gerald and Lorry, along with a friend named David Silverstein, started a company called The Bookstore Press. They published some of the first paperback books for children. Famous authors like Maurice Sendak had their books published there. In 1977, Gerald and Lorry moved to Tesuque, New Mexico, where they lived for seventeen years and raised their two daughters, Hannah and Mariah.

During this time, Hausman taught poetry and English at Santa Fe Preparatory School in nearby Santa Fe. He also started the Blue Harbour School of Creative Writing in Jamaica. He even worked as a poet in schools in Pittsfield, Massachusetts.

Since 2002, Gerald Hausman has worked with Cedella Marley, who is the daughter of the famous musician Bob Marley. They have written five books together, starting with The Boy From Nine Miles: The Early Life of Bob Marley.

Gerald Hausman has shared his stories and read from his books all over the United States and Europe. He has also been a speaker for many important groups, including National Public Radio and the History Channel.

Awards and Honors

Gerald Hausman has won many awards for his writing:

  • In 1965, he won the Union College Poetry Prize for his book Quebec Poems.
  • In 1995, the American Folklore Society gave him the Aesop Accolade Award for Duppy Talk: West Indian Tales of Mystery and Magic.
  • His book Doctor Bird: Three Lookin' Up Tales from Jamaica was named a Notable Social Studies Book for Young People in 1996 and 1999 by the Children's Book Council.
  • In 1999, Dogs of Myth: Tales from Around the World was chosen as a "Pick of the Lists Selection" by the American Booksellers Association.
  • His books Tom Cringle: Battle on the High Seas and Cats of Myth: Tales from around the World were chosen as "Best Book Selections" by Bank Street College of Education in 2000.
  • He received a Silver Medal for NonFiction from the Parents' Choice Award in 2003.
  • In 2004, Escape from Botany Bay was named a "Best Book for the Teen Age" by the New York Public Library.
  • A Mind With Wings was named a "Best Book Designation" by the National Council for the Social Studies and Children's Book Council in 2007.
  • In 2013, The Otter, The Spotted Frog and the Great Flood: A Creek Indian Story won several awards, including the Midwest Book Awards and the Foreword IndieFab Book of the Year.
