How the U-2334 Was Built
The U-2334 was a Type XXIII submarine. When it was on the surface, it weighed about 234 tons. When it was underwater, it weighed a bit more, around 258 tons.
This submarine was about 34.68 meters (113 feet) long. It was 3.02 meters (9 feet 11 inches) wide. The part of the submarine that sat below the water was about 3.66 meters (12 feet) deep.
Engines and Power
The U-2334 used different engines to move. It had a diesel engine for when it was on the surface. This engine gave it a lot of power, between 575 and 630 horsepower.
It also had two electric motors for when it was underwater. One was a standard electric motor with 580 horsepower. The other was a special "silent running" electric motor. This smaller motor had 35 horsepower and allowed the submarine to move very quietly.
Speed and Range
When U-2334 was on the surface, its top speed was about 9.7 knots (18 kilometers per hour). Underwater, it could go faster, reaching 12.5 knots (23 kilometers per hour).
The submarine could travel a long way without needing to refuel. On the surface, it could go about 2,600 nautical miles (4,815 kilometers) at a speed of 8 knots. Underwater, it could travel about 194 nautical miles (359 kilometers) at 4 knots.
Depth and Weapons
The U-2334 could dive deep, down to about 180 meters (590 feet). It had a crew of 14 to 18 sailors.
For weapons, it had two torpedo tubes at the front. It could carry two torpedoes, which were loaded and ready to fire. Unlike some larger submarines, the Type XXIII did not have a deck gun.
The U-2334's Journey and End
On May 9, 1945, near the end of World War II, the U-2334 surrendered. It was in Kristiansand, Norway, at the time. Later, on May 29, 1945, it was moved to Loch Ryan, Scotland.
After the war, many German U-boats that had surrendered were sunk by the Allied forces. This was part of a plan called Operation Deadlight. U-2334 was one of 116 submarines chosen for this operation.
On November 28, 1945, U-2334 was towed out to sea. It was then sunk by gunfire from two destroyers: the British Royal Navy ship HMS Onslow and the Polish ship ORP Piorun.
Today, the wreck of U-2334 lies underwater at these coordinates: 56°10′N 10°05′W / 56.167°N 10.083°W.
