A Look Back: Germantown's History
The village of Germantown was started in 1833. It was first called "Hanover." This name came from a city in Germany where the first settlers were from. Germantown is known as one of the very first true German settlements in Illinois.
Where is Germantown?
Germantown is located in southern Illinois. Illinois Route 161 runs along the southern edge of the village. This road goes east about 22 miles to Centralia. It also goes west about 9 miles to New Baden. The big city of St. Louis is about 39 miles to the west. You can get there by taking Interstate 64.
The village covers a total area of about 1.01 square miles. All of this area is land.

Famous Faces from Germantown
- Red Schoendienst was a famous baseball player. He played second base and is in the Major League Baseball Hall of Fame. He was born in Germantown.
Learning in Germantown
Germantown has its own elementary school, called Germantown Elementary. This school teaches students from Pre-Kindergarten up to eighth grade. It has won awards for being very good at academics.
The school also offers many fun activities outside of regular classes. These include:

This school was created in 1971 when the high schools from Breese and Aviston joined together. Another choice is a private school called Mater Dei Catholic High School.
