Gesture facts for kids

A gesture is a way we communicate without using words. Instead of speaking, we use movements of our body. Think of it like a secret language made of actions!
Gestures are special because they are movements we make on purpose. They are not just any random body movements. Our brain handles gestures in the same areas that deal with language. This includes parts of the brain called Broca's and Wernicke's area. These areas are also used for speech and sign language.
Some body movements have meaning but are not true gestures. For example, if you scream when you are in great pain, that's a natural reaction. It's not a gesture because you didn't choose to do it. Many animals also communicate using these kinds of automatic behaviors. For instance, a dog is very good at understanding both human gestures and natural body language.
Gestures often have different meanings in different cultures. A gesture that means one thing in your country might mean something completely different somewhere else!

What are some common gestures?
- High five – This is a fun way to say hello or show you are happy about something.
- Facepalm – When you put your hand over your face, it often shows you are frustrated or disappointed.
- Sign of the cross – This is a religious gesture used by some people.
- V sign – Holding up your first two fingers in a "V" shape can mean victory or peace.
What is NOT a gesture?
It's important to know that not all body movements are gestures. Gestures are always done on purpose. Here are some examples of movements that are not gestures:
- Screaming when you are in great pain or terror.
- Showing your teeth when you are angry.
- Cowering or running away in fear.
- Many actions babies do, like suckling.
These movements are usually automatic reactions. They are caused by things like hormones and older parts of our brain. While humans can learn to control these reactions a little bit, they are not chosen actions like gestures are.
