Gilbert's Soccer Journey
Gilbert Álvarez started playing soccer in his hometown of Santa Cruz, Bolivia. He was part of several youth teams, including Club Destroyers and Club Calleja. These teams helped him learn and grow as a young player.
In August 2010, Gilbert moved to Brazil to join a big club called Cruzeiro. Even though he was with the team, he did not play in any first-team games during his time there.
Later, in August 2011, Gilbert thought about moving to Europe to play soccer. His agent talked with clubs in Germany and Italy, but a move did not happen at that time.
On November 25, 2023, Gilbert joined Arema, a club in Indonesia. However, he left the club early on March 7, 2024. He said he wanted to be closer to his family. Since 2024, he has been playing for Oriente Petrolero in Bolivia.
Playing for His Country
Bolivia's Youth Team
When Gilbert was playing for Club Calleja, he was chosen to play for the Bolivia U17 team. He played as their main striker in the 2009 South American U-17 Championship. He scored three goals in this tournament. This included two goals against Ecuador under-17s in the final group stage.
Playing for the Senior Team
Later in 2009, when Gilbert was only 17 years old, he was called up to play for the senior Bolivia side. This was a big achievement for such a young player!
His first game for the senior team was on June 6, 2009. He came in as a substitute against Venezuela in a qualifying match for the 2010 FIFA World Cup. He played his second game the next year, in February 2010. This was a friendly match against Mexico.

About Gilbert's Life
Gilbert Álvarez comes from a large family. He is the fifth of thirteen children! He has always dreamed of playing soccer in Europe. In an interview in 2009, he said he was happy to hear that a club called Lazio was interested in him. His biggest dream was to play for Manchester United. Gilbert also has two brothers, William and Sebastián Álvarez, who are also soccer players.
