Gilbert Álvarez Vargas (born April 7, 1992) is a talented Bolivian footballer. He plays as a forward, which means he's usually trying to score goals! Currently, he plays for the División Profesional club Oriente Petrolero.

Gilbert Álvarez's Club Journey
Gilbert started his football journey playing for different youth teams. He grew up in Santa Cruz, Bolivia. Some of his early teams included Club Destroyers and Club Calleja.
In August 2010, Gilbert joined Cruzeiro, a big club in Brazil. Even though he didn't play for their main team, it was a great experience. He continued to develop his skills there.
A year later, in August 2011, Gilbert thought about playing in Europe. His agent was talking to clubs in Germany and Italy. This shows how much potential he had, even at a young age!
Later in his career, on November 25, 2023, Gilbert joined Arema, a club in Indonesia. However, he decided to leave the club early on March 7, 2024. He wanted to be closer to his family, which is very understandable.
Gilbert has played for many clubs throughout his career. Some of these include The Strongest, Guabirá, Real Potosí, and Jorge Wilstermann. He has scored many goals for these teams!
Playing for Bolivia
Gilbert also proudly represents his home country, Bolivia. When he was with Club Calleja, he was chosen to play for the Bolivia U17 squad. He was the main striker for them in the 2009 South American U-17 Championship.
In that tournament, he scored three goals! One time, he scored two goals against Ecuador under-17s. This helped his team a lot.
Later in 2009, when he was just 17 years old, Gilbert was called up to the senior Bolivia side. This is a huge achievement for such a young player! He played his first game for the senior team against Venezuela. This was a qualifying match for the 2010 FIFA World Cup.
He played another game the next year in February 2010. It was a friendly match against Mexico.
Scoring for His Country
Gilbert has scored 5 goals for the Bolivia national team. His first goal was against Nicaragua in 2017. He scored another goal against Nicaragua in the same year. He also scored against Peru in a World Cup qualification match. His other goals were in friendly games against Venezuela and Haiti.
Beyond the Field: Gilbert's Life
Gilbert comes from a very big family! He is the fifth of thirteen children. Imagine how busy their house must be!
He has always dreamed of playing football in Europe. In an interview from 2009, he said he was excited about interest from a club called Lazio. His biggest dream was to play for Manchester United, a famous team in England.
Gilbert isn't the only footballer in his family. His brothers, William and Sebastián Álvarez, also play soccer! It must be fun to have so many players in one family.
