Gilson Kleina's Coaching Journey
Gilson Kleina started his football career in Curitiba. He began as a fitness coach for the youth teams at Coritiba. Later, he worked as an assistant coach. He helped famous coach Abel Braga at Coritiba, and also worked with big clubs like Olympique de Marseille in France and Atlético Mineiro.
First Steps as a Head Coach
Kleina became a head coach for the first time in 2001 with Vila Nova. After another time as an assistant, he took charge of Iraty in 2002. Over the years, he managed many different teams. These included Criciúma, Paraná, Paysandu, and Ipatinga. He often helped teams improve their performance.
Leading Ponte Preta to Success
In November 2010, Gilson Kleina became the manager of Ponte Preta. This was a very important time in his career. He helped the team get promoted from Série B (Brazil's second division). This meant Ponte Preta returned to the top league after six years.
Managing Palmeiras and Winning a Title
On September 19, 2012, Kleina took over as manager of Sociedade Esportiva Palmeiras. This is one of Brazil's biggest clubs. Even though the team was relegated (moved down a division) that year, he led them back to the first division. They won the Série B championship in 2013 under his leadership. Despite this success, he left the club in May 2014.
Other Coaching Roles
After Palmeiras, Kleina managed several other teams. He worked with Bahia and Avaí. In 2015, he returned to his first club, Coritiba, but this time as the main manager. He also coached Goiás.
He returned to Ponte Preta for a second time in 2017. Later that year, he became the manager of Chapecoense. He was with Chapecoense until August 2018.
Recent Coaching Positions
Gilson Kleina has had multiple stints with Ponte Preta, showing his strong connection with the club. He also managed Náutico and Brusque. In 2023, he coached Portuguesa. He helped them avoid relegation in the 2023 Campeonato Paulista, which is a state championship. He continues to coach different teams, always looking for new challenges.
