History of Ginsters
How Ginsters Started
The Ginsters company began in 1969. It was started by Geoffrey Ginster in Cornwall. He set up his business in an old egg-packing station. At first, there were only four people working there. Geoffrey Ginster used a special recipe to make his pasties. He said he got the recipe from a ship's cook.
Growing the Business
The company slowly grew bigger. By 1970, about 30 people worked for Ginsters. They were making 48,000 pasties every day! Ginsters pasties were first sold in pubs, cafes, and small shops. These were mainly in Plymouth and towns near the sea. Soon, their products were sold all over southern England.
New Owners and Expansion
In 1977, Geoffrey Ginster decided to retire. He sold the business to a company called Samworth Brothers. This led to even more growth for Ginsters. A nearby factory was bought and updated with modern baking equipment. This new factory was named the Tamar Bakery. Later, it was made even bigger with new machines. The original Ginsters bakery then closed down.
By 1984, Ginsters was making 1.5 million pasties every week. It became the largest private employer in East Cornwall. In 1987, a new bakery was built next to the Tamar Bakery. It was named Lynher Bakery, after the nearby River Lynher.
Reaching More People
In 1990, Ginsters started advertising their products. This helped more people learn about them. Soon, Ginsters Original Cornish Pasty was sold in big supermarkets. You could also find them in petrol stations and convenience stores. Ginsters says their Original Cornish Pasty is the most popular savory pastry. They have sold over 450 million of them in twenty years!

Ginsters and Politics
Companies sometimes support political groups. Ginsters, or the Samworth brothers who own it, have given money to the Conservative Party. Since 2002, Ginsters has donated at least £32,000. The Samworth brothers have also given over £610,000 since 2010. This is a way for them to support the party's ideas.
Ginsters Products
The Original Cornish Pasty
Ginsters' most famous product is the Original Cornish Pasty. These pasties are special because they have a "protected geographical indication" (PGI) status. This means only pasties made in Cornwall, following a specific recipe, can be called "Cornish Pasties." This status was given by the European Union in 2011. Ginsters still uses its original recipe for this popular pasty.
Other Tasty Snacks
Since the 1990s, Ginsters has made many other products. Their range includes different types of pasties and savory slices. They also make sausage rolls, pork pies, hot pies, and various snacks. You can find Ginsters sandwiches, flatbreads, wraps, and packaged salads too. Ginsters states that they get their ingredients from farms close by in Cornwall.
Vegan Options
Since 2019, Ginsters has started making products for people who eat vegan food. For example, their Moroccan vegetable pasty won an award in 2020. In 2021, they added more vegan pasty fillings. These include Bombay potato and spinach, and Cajun Spiced Sweet Potato and Chickpea pasties.
