Who Was Giovanni Battista Antonelli?
Giovanni Battista Antonelli was an expert in building strong defenses like fortifications and castles. He worked for Spain during the second half of the 1500s. His main job was to protect the country's coastlines from attacks.
Building Coastal Defenses
In 1568, King Philip II of Spain asked a nobleman named Vespasian Gonzaga to create a plan to defend Spain's Mediterranean coast. King Philip wanted to make sure the coast was safe from invaders.
Antonelli joined Gonzaga as an expert. Together, they inspected many places and planned new defenses. They focused on important port cities like Cartagena, the coast of the Kingdom of Valencia, and even ports in Africa like Oran and Mazalquivir.
Key Projects and Structures
As part of this big defense project, Antonelli helped build many structures. Some of his most important works include:
- A series of watchtowers along the coasts of the Kingdom of Murcia and Valencia. These towers helped spot enemy ships early.
- The rebuilding of the Castle of Santa Barbara in Alicante (Spain) in 1562. This castle overlooked the city and was very important for its defense.
- The construction of the Benidorm Palace and the Tower of Santa Faz in Alicante in 1575.
- The reservoir of Tibi in 1580, which helped supply water.
- New walls to protect the town of Peñíscola.
Other Engineering Ideas
From 1580, Antonelli also spent time studying a big idea: making the river Tagus navigable. This meant trying to make it possible for boats to travel all the way from Lisbon to Toledo. However, this ambitious project never actually happened.
In the early 1580s, he also helped design defenses for the Strait of Magellan. This narrow waterway was important because it connected the Atlantic and Pacific oceans. Spain wanted to build fortifications there to stop other countries' ships from entering the Pacific. Unfortunately, the Spanish attempt to settle the strait faced many challenges and did not succeed.
