Giovanni Marinelli (born October 18, 1879 – died January 11, 1944) was an important Italian political leader. He was part of the Fascist movement. Marinelli was born in a town called Adria in Veneto, Italy.

Early Life and Fascist Party Role

Giovanni Marinelli was a wealthy man. He used his money to help the Fascist party grow. He helped pay for the March on Rome, which was a big event that brought the Fascists to power in Italy.

As a leader of the National Fascist Party (PNF), Marinelli created a special group called the Ceka. This group was like a secret police. It was set up similar to a group in the Soviet Union.

The Ceka became known for its harsh methods. It was involved in the killing of Giacomo Matteotti. Matteotti was a well-known politician who spoke out against the Fascist government.

After the Matteotti Case

Marinelli was put on trial in November 1925 because of the Matteotti case. He was defended by another powerful Fascist leader, Roberto Farinacci. Marinelli received a light punishment for his part in the event.

He was good friends with Benito Mussolini, the leader of Italy. This friendship helped him avoid serving a long sentence. For many years after, Marinelli stayed mostly out of the public eye.

However, he was still involved in stopping people who opposed Mussolini. This included some members within his own Fascist party.

Political Career and Later Years

Giovanni Marinelli was elected to the Chamber of Deputies in Italy. This happened in 1929 and again in 1934. The Chamber of Deputies is like a parliament where laws are made.

From November 1939 to February 1943, he held an important job. He was the State Undersecretary for Communications. This role meant he helped manage things like mail and telephones for the country.

End of His Life

Marinelli was a member of the Grand Council of Fascism. This was a very important group in the Fascist government. On July 25, 1943, he joined a plan to remove Mussolini from power.

This plan was led by Dino Grandi. The goal was for Italy to change sides in World War II. They wanted Italy to leave its alliance with Nazi Germany and join the Allies.

But the Nazis helped Mussolini regain control in Northern Italy. He then set up a new government called the Italian Social Republic. Marinelli was then accused of treason (betraying his country).

He was put on trial in 1944 at the Verona trial. Marinelli was found guilty and put to death. Other important figures were also put to death at this time, including Galeazzo Ciano, who was Mussolini's son-in-law and former foreign minister.

In Popular Culture

Giovanni Marinelli has been shown in movies. In the 1973 film The Assassination of Matteotti, he was played by an actor named Orazio Stracuzzi.
