Gisborough Moor is a wide, open area of land, also known as a moor, located in England. It's part of the beautiful North York Moors national park. You can find it just south of the town of Guisborough.

The highest part of Gisborough Moor is a wide, flat ridge. Its very top point is about 1.5 kilometers (about a mile) south of a special marker called a trig point. Many walking paths cross the moor, connecting the famous Cleveland Way trail with villages like Commondale further south. From the moor's north-western edge, a spot called Highcliff Nab offers amazing views looking down over Guisborough.

Remembering History on Gisborough Moor

First World War Memorial

About 1.4 kilometers (less than a mile) from the highest point of Gisborough Moor, on a nearby area called Commondale Moor, there's a special memorial. It was built to remember two friends who worked on the Gisborough Estate. They both left for London in 1914 to join the Grenadier Guards, a famous part of the British Army.

Sadly, one of the friends died during the Battle of the Somme in 1916. This was a very large and difficult battle during the First World War. His body was never found. The other friend passed away in 1920 from injuries he received during the war. This memorial is now a protected historical site, known as a Grade II listed building. This means it's important and kept safe for future generations.

Second World War "Starfish" Site

About 3.2 kilometers (2 miles) away, on Great Ayton Moor, there was a secret "Starfish" site during the Second World War. This was a clever trick used to protect nearby towns from enemy bombers.

At the site, there were large tanks filled with a liquid that could easily catch fire. When German planes were expected to bomb the area, this liquid was set on fire. It was then put out in a way that made the steam look exactly like a burning town or city from the air. This fooled the German pilots into dropping their bombs harmlessly onto the moor instead of hitting the important industrial town of Middlesbrough, which was just to the north west.
