Glandore is a suburb in Adelaide, South Australia. It's a unique place because it's partly in the City of Marion and partly in the City of West Torrens. People believe the name Glandore comes from a town in County Cork, Ireland. This is where the family of John O'Dea, one of the first people to own land here, originally came from.

A Look Back at Glandore

The part of Glandore that is in the City of Marion was once known as Edwardstown.

Schools and Homes for Children

There was a special school here called the Edwardstown Industrial School. It opened in 1898 and later changed its name to Glandore Industrial School in 1949. This school helped boys who were under the care of the state. Girls who needed similar care were sent to a different place called Seaforth Home.

In 1958, the Glandore Industrial School became the Glandore Children's Home. It continued to look after boys until it closed its doors in 1966.

Windana Remand Home

From 1965 to 1975, another place called the Windana Remand Home was located on Naldera Street. It was on the same grounds as the Glandore Boys Home. This facility was a place for young males who needed temporary care or supervision.
