Glasgow is a small community in Coos County, Oregon, United States. It is known as an "unincorporated community," which means it doesn't have its own local government like a city does. For counting purposes, the U.S. Census Bureau calls it a "census-designated place" (CDP). In 2020, about 785 people lived in Glasgow. The local Coos language name for Glasgow is Kdet.

Where is Glasgow Located?

Glasgow is found on the north side of Coos Bay. It's about 6 miles (10 km) north of the city of Coos Bay. You can find it just east of U.S. Route 101, a major highway.

How Glasgow Started

This community was started in the 1890s by people who bought and sold land, hoping it would grow. Some of these founders included Henry L. Pittock and Phil Metschan. For a long time, Glasgow didn't grow much.

Things changed about 30 years later when Route 101 was built. Glasgow became the northern end of a ferry route from North Bend. This ferry helped people cross the bay before the Coos Bay Bridge was finished.

People say a person from Scotland named the town Glasgow because it reminded them of Glasgow, Scotland. However, this story has not been fully confirmed.

Life in Glasgow

Glasgow has a local store where people can buy things. It also has a Grange hall, called the North Bayside Grange. This hall was built in 1928 and is a community gathering place.

There's a funny sign at the store that says the town's population is "275.5." The ".5" part is a joke for the store owner, Jack S. Stevens, who calls himself the "self-proclaimed mayor."
