Glen is a town located in Montgomery County, New York, in the United States. In 2010, about 2,507 people lived there. The town got its name from Jacob Glen, who was an early landowner in the area.

The Town of Glen is located in the middle of Montgomery County, just southwest of the City of Amsterdam.

History of Glen

Glen was first settled by European colonists around 1725. The town was officially formed in 1823. It was created from a part of another town called Charleston.

In 1848, a larger community within the town, located along the Mohawk River, became an official village called Fultonville. Other important communities in the Town of Glen include the small areas known as hamlets, such as Glen, Mill Point, Auriesville, and Stone Ridge.

Geography of Glen

The Town of Glen covers a total area of about 39.3 square miles (101.8 square kilometers). Most of this area, about 38.7 square miles (100.0 square kilometers), is land. The rest, about 0.6 square miles (1.8 square kilometers), is water.

The Mohawk River forms the northern border of the town. The Schoharie Creek forms the eastern border.

The New York State Thruway (Interstate 90) runs through the northern part of Glen. It follows the southern bank of the Mohawk River. New York State Route 5S runs alongside the Thruway. New York State Route 30A is a road that goes north and south. It meets New York State Route 161 in the hamlet of Glen.

Communities and Places in Glen

  • Auries Creek – This is a small river that flows into the Mohawk River. It is in the central part of Glen. Its name comes from a Native American who lived in the area.
  • Auriesville – This is a small community (hamlet) located along the Mohawk River. It is in the northeastern part of the town, near NY-5S. This place is believed to be where a Mohawk village called Ossernenon once stood. It is famous because Jesuit missionaries were killed here in the 1640s. They are now honored as North American Martyrs by the Roman Catholic Church.
  • Fultonville – This is a village in the northern part of the town. It is right next to the Mohawk River, where NY-5S and NY-30A meet.
  • Glen – This is the main hamlet in the center of the town. It is located where NY-161 and NY-30A cross. This community was once called "Vorheesville" and "Five Corners." The Glen Historic District, which is a special area with old buildings, was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2001.
  • Square Barn Corners – This is a place located between the village of Fultonville and the hamlet of Glen, along NY-30A.
  • Stone Ridge – This is another hamlet located on the western edge of the town. It is also by the Mohawk River and NY-5S.
  • Van Wie Creek – This is a small river that flows into the Mohawk River. It is in the northwestern part of Glen.
