History of Glen Rock
Early Settlement and Growth
Glen Rock was founded by William Heathcote, who came from England. In 1826, he moved to Pennsylvania. He bought a farm in 1837 because he wanted to use the river's power. This power, called hydropower, comes from moving water.
Heathcote built a brick woolen mill on the land. A woolen mill is a factory where wool is made into cloth. This mill attracted many workers and farmers to the area.
Naming the Town
Later in the 1830s, Glen Rock got its own train station. In the 1840s, a post office, church, and iron factory were built. In December 1843, Heathcote suggested the name Glen Rock. He got the idea from a poem called Marmion.
Becoming a Borough
By 1858, about 200 people lived in Glen Rock. The residents asked for it to become an official borough. This happened on August 29, 1859.
The old mill is still the oldest building in Glen Rock. It was closed for repairs in the 1980s. Now, it's a special hotel and restaurant. In 2022, the mill received a grant to make it look more like it did when it was first built.
The Glen Rock Historic District was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1997. This means it's an important historical area.
