Glenalta is a suburb in Adelaide, South Australia. It is located in the foothills of the Mount Lofty Ranges. This means it's in the lower parts of the hills, offering great views. It is also very close to Belair National Park, a large natural area.

In 2009, a person who studies populations, named Bernard Salt, said Glenalta was Adelaide's best suburb to live in. He liked its good prices, easy access to places, and pleasant atmosphere.

Glenalta's Past: A Look at History

The first European settlers came to the Glenalta area in the 1840s. They called the area "Blackwood Vale Farm."

The name Glenalta comes from two words: "glen," which means a valley, and "alta," which means high. So, Glenalta means 'a valley near a hill'.

In 1869, the Blackwood Inn opened. It was later renamed the Belair Hotel in 1880. Robert Burfield, an early settler, opened this inn.

The suburb was first divided into 62 smaller pieces of land in 1926. More land was divided in the 1950s and 1960s. This allowed more homes to be built.

Getting Around: Transport in Glenalta

Glenalta has its own train station, called Glenalta railway station. It is on the Belair railway line, which connects the suburb to other parts of Adelaide.

Several bus routes also serve the area. Routes 195 and 195F travel to and from the city.

Routes 196 and 196F also go to and from the city. These buses start from the nearby Blackwood Interchange.

Other bus routes, like 893 and 894, connect Blackwood Interchange to Aldgate. This helps people travel to different towns.
