She was well-known for her roles in popular movies like Dirty Rotten Scoundrels, Dick Tracy, and Mr. Holland's Opus. Glenne Headly won a Theatre World Award and four Joseph Jefferson Awards for her acting. She was also nominated for two Primetime Emmy Awards.

In 2017, she appeared in the movies The Circle and Just Getting Started. The movie Just Getting Started was her last film role and was released after she passed away. She also starred in the TV show Future Man with Ed Begley Jr. and Josh Hutcherson. This show was a comedy series on Hulu and was produced by Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg. Glenne Headly died on June 8, 2017, while she was still filming the series.

Early Life and Education

Glenne Headly was born on March 13, 1955, in New London, Connecticut. When she was very young, she lived with her mother, Joan Ida Headly, in San Francisco. She also spent time with her grandmother in Lansford, Pennsylvania.

Later, during her elementary school years, she moved to Greenwich Village to live with her mother. She learned ballet at the Robert Joffrey school and modern dance at the Martha Graham Studios. In New York, she went to public schools. At P. S. 41, she was in a class for very smart children. A teacher there introduced her to the work of Jacques Cousteau in an oceanography class. This sparked her lifelong interest in protecting nature. She then attended the High School of Performing Arts, where she studied drama and graduated with high honors.

Instead of continuing drama right away, she went to the American College of Switzerland. It was a small college in Leysin, where she earned a bachelor's degree. After college, she moved back to New York. She worked day jobs as a waitress so she could act in theater at night, often for very little pay. Later, she moved to Chicago and joined the New Works Ensemble at the St. Nicholas Theatre. She eventually got a part in a Goodman Theatre play called Curse of the Starving Class. This play was directed by Robert Falls and also starred John Malkovich.

Film and Television Career

While acting in Curse of the Starving Class in Chicago, Glenne Headly was asked to join the Steppenwolf Theatre group. This group was looking to add new members. She also appeared in several other plays. In Chicago, she was nominated for five Joseph Jefferson awards and won three for best supporting actress. She earned her Actors' Equity card when she was cast in a summer theater play called Charley's Aunt. She joined SAG (Screen Actors Guild) when director Arthur Penn gave her an important role in the film Four Friends.

On August 2, 1982, Glenne Headly married John Malkovich, who was also an actor in the Steppenwolf Theatre. Soon after, she took over a role in the play Extremities off-Broadway. She then acted in The Philanthropist, also off-Broadway, and won a Theatre World Award for being a great new performer. In New York, she appeared in Balm in Gilead with her Steppenwolf Theatre friends. She also acted in Arms and the Man on Broadway, alongside famous actors Kevin Kline and Raul Julia.

Early Film and TV Work (1988–1995)

Glenne Headly played many supporting roles in movies like Making Mr. Right, Paperhouse, and Nadine. But her role in Dirty Rotten Scoundrels (1988) really helped her film career take off. In this movie, she starred with Steve Martin and Michael Caine. In 1988, the Chicago Film Critics Association named her the Most Promising New Actress. That same year, Glenne Headly and John Malkovich divorced.

In 1989, Headly played Elmira Boot Johnson in the TV miniseries Lonesome Dove. This role earned her the first of two Emmy Awards nominations for best supporting actress in a TV movie.

After that, Warren Beatty chose her to play Tess Trueheart in the movie Dick Tracy. She then starred with Demi Moore and Bruce Willis in Mortal Thoughts. In 1992, she worked on a small Canadian film called Ordinary Magic. On the first day of filming, she met Byron McCulloch, who would become her husband in 1993. She also co-starred with Ted Danson and Macaulay Culkin in the 1994 comedy Getting Even with Dad.

Theater Work

Glenne Headly was a member of the Steppenwolf Theatre Company from 1979 until 2005. However, she did not return to Chicago to perform in a play after the late 1980s.
