The golden-throated barbet (scientific name: Psilopogon franklinii) is a colorful bird found in Southeast Asia. It lives mostly in forests high up in the mountains, usually between 900 and 2,700 meters (about 3,000 to 9,000 feet) above sea level. This bird is listed as "Least Concern" by the IUCN Red List, which means its population is stable and it's not currently in danger of disappearing.

About the Golden-throated Barbet
The golden-throated barbet got its scientific name, Bucco franklinii, from a scientist named Edward Blyth in 1842. He described a bright green barbet with a golden throat that he found in Darjeeling, India.
Over time, scientists learned more about these birds. They used new methods, like studying the birds' DNA, to understand how different species are related. This is called molecular phylogenetic research. Because of this research, the golden-throated barbet and many other similar birds were grouped under the genus Psilopogon.
Today, scientists recognize two main types, or subspecies, of the golden-throated barbet:
- P. f. franklinii: This type lives in the Himalayan foothills. You can find it from central Nepal to northern Myanmar, Laos, and southwestern China.
- P. f. ramsayi: This type lives from central and eastern Myanmar all the way to the Malay Peninsula.
What Does It Look Like?
The golden-throated barbet is a very striking bird. Its upper body is a bright, vivid green, while its belly is a lighter yellowish-green. Its wings are a deep blue, and the feathers under its tail are a pretty blue-green color.
Around its eyes, the bird has black markings, and its beak is a dark, dusky black. The top of its head, called the forehead, is a bright crimson red, and its throat is a vibrant orange. Its legs are greenish.
This bird is about 20.5 to 23.5 centimeters (8 to 9 inches) long. It weighs between 50 and 101 grams (about 1.8 to 3.6 ounces), which is about the weight of a small apple.
Where Does It Live?
The golden-throated barbet lives in many countries across Asia. You can find it in Nepal, India, Bhutan, Myanmar, Thailand, Malaysia, Laos, Vietnam, and mainland China. It's not certain if it also lives in Bangladesh.
These birds prefer to live in warm, wet forests, often called tropical and subtropical moist forests. They like to be at higher elevations, usually from 900 to 2,700 meters (about 3,000 to 9,000 feet) above sea level.
Its Daily Life
One of the most noticeable things about the golden-throated barbet is its call. The male bird makes a very loud sound, which often sounds like "pukwowk." This call helps the male mark its territory and communicate with other barbets.
